Buying American Again

By David Norton

Our country was built upon several principles. Besides the obvious ones that were drilled into our heads in history class, business in the United States used to be known for something much more, yet arguably as important as their products. Customer service is something that has seemed to be forgotten in this country. We now look at this forgotten trait as something that we have lost, when in face, other cultures seem to be running laps around us in this category. This could not be more evident when you go abroad, or better yet, step onto an American airline compared to any foreign airline.

Whether it is our capitalistic society, or our culture of "entitlement," we are losing business and industry due to our poor attitudes with our customers. It is no surprise that good service brings not only customer loyalty, but sales, free marketing (when consumers promote through word of mouth), and simply a better working environment. With these seemingly tangible facts, it is no wonder why American industry, particularly with regards to service, is tumbling out of control.

And though this is the case for most of our nation's industry, there are a few shining outliers which deserve our patronage. I'm all of buying American, especially in these trying times, and have compiled a list of worthy companies whose outstanding customer service competes with anyone.

1. Amazon.com
2. USAA
3. The Ritz Carlton
4. Publix Supermarkets
5. Zappos.com
6. Hewlett-Packard
7. T. Rowe Price
8. Ace Hardware

These firms have all been ranked very highly with regards to customer service. Many of the reputable names you see undoubtedly have prospered through the years due to strong management, and an effective customer service strategy. So the next time you're fed up with giving your money to people who show you contempt, look for alternatives.
